When My Parents Changed My Own Work Essay - 1005 Words

There were moments in my childhood when my parents tumbled short of my dreams. With the commitment to a full-time job as well as part-time jobs, neither of them had enough time to spend at home. I’ve always wondered the secret to my parents’ happiness in their workplace despite the long, irregular hours. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a Hungarian psychologist, discovered the psychological concept of ‘flow’ that might explain the workaholic phenomenon. Flow is a mental state of effortless concentration and enjoyment in an activity. For example, a complete absorption at work results in a sense of euphoria. By changing the perspective of a job to make it personally meaningful, even the most mundane task can produce flow. Looking back, my parents definitely indulged in their flow zone. Watching how hard my parents worked consequently inspired my own work ethics. Under their influence, I began to pursue different job opportunities, exploring fields like customer service, medicine, psychology and marketing. Even though the nature of the experienc es varied drastically, what I’ve learned from them were equally valuable. I/O psychology appeals to me in that I want to make a difference in the lives of employees, resolving problems like work-family conflict, workaholism, gender discrimination and many more.
